Dear Alumnus,
Warm greetings to you from the Alma Mater. We the family of Omayal Achi College of
Nursing, wish you a bright and prosperous New Year 2008. It gives us immense pleasure to inform
you about the activities of our college and about nursing service through this
9th edition of the alumni newsletter. On this occasion, we are pleased to
inform you that the alumni stands today with a strength of 610 members.

We are delighted to update you on our growth in various dimensions. The present strength of our college is

v
The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University
conducted an inspection on 18.4.2007 and The Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives
Council conducted an inspection on 26.11.2007 for grant of continuance of
affiliation for both B.Sc(N) and M.Sc (N) programmes for the year 2007 –
2008.

The college is in the process of preparing
graduates to take up Masters / Post Masters / Ph.D programmes and faculty
exchange with Simon Fraser University.
v
Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University
conducted an inspection on 10.9.2007 for recognizing 2 departments Community Health Nursing and Maternity
Nursing for conducting Ph.D programme.
The report is awaited.
v
The YRC unit of our college actively
participated in various activities such as conducting blood donation camps,
celebrating World Leprosy Day, Organizing Health camps for old age people,
Rendering voluntary services at KMCH, Chennai and participating in “May I Help
You Programme at Government ophthalmic hospital, Egmore. Students participated and presented
various programme at OACHC on account of Rose day celebration and Diabetic day
celebration.

NSS special camp was organized at Gowdipuram
from 22/1/2007 – 31/1/2007. 50
Nss volunteers participated and
conducted various programme for village people. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. A.R. Kasiviswanathan
Trustee. Mr. Durairaj, Commandent
Tamil Nadu Special Police, inaugurated General Health camp. Students celebrated International
Women’s Day on 8th March.
Mrs. Sivasankari Advocate for Poonamallee subcourt was the chief
guest. Art of Living classes was
organized by NSS unit from 24.9.2007 – 28.9.2007.

International Midwives day was celebrated on
3.5.2007. Dr.(Mrs).A.V. Raman Dean
presented paper on theme “Midwives reach out to women where they live”. On the mark of International Midwives
day celebration, faculty conducted health education programme to Antenatal
mothers.

v Prof.
S. Kanchana Principal attended a programme on positive practice environment at
Sankara Nethralaya hospital.

Dr.(Mrs).A.V. Raman was Chief guest for
International Midwives day celebration at CMC Vellore and presented on the theme
“Midwives reach out to women where they live”.

Campus interview was conducted by various
specialty hospitals like, Madras Medical Mission, Apollo Hospital, Adyar Cancer
Institute, Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital
for final year B.Sc students and all the students were
selected.

Annual Day- The college celebrated the XV
Annual Day on 26.6.2007 at Chinmaya Heritage Hall, Chetpet, Chennai – 31. Honorable Vice Chancellor of the Tamil
Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University Dr. Meer Mustafa Hussain was the Chief
Guest.

The University Gold Medal Winners for the highest marks in Community Health Nursing were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1,000 each to

The Management honoured 3
senior professors Dr. Natarajan, Dr. Raj Narayanan and Prof. Daniel for their
outstanding contribution to the college in their area of expertise.
Dr. (Mrs). Renuka Somasekar Mukerjee Best Teacher Award was awarded to
Dr.(Mrs).A.V. Raman.
Variety Entertainment programme was given by SNA body and it was
appreciated by all.

The College celebrated this year’s Breast
Feeding Week by conducting a presentation on the theme “one hour saves one
million babies”. The week was
celebrated with various activities like seminar, quiz competition, role play,
villupattu at college, tie up hospitals and community health center by faculty
and students.

The breast feeding week and First year
completion of under five clinic was celebrated at Omayal Achi Community Health
Centre with the collaboration of Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Indian Medical
Association, Rotary Club of Tambaram, National Neonatal forum and Johnson and
Johnson. Mrs. Valli Alagappan
Trustee, was the Chief Guest for the programme. Students participated actively in
various competitions at Child Trust Hospital and bagged prizes for various
competitions.

The World Health Day was celebrated this year
on the theme “International Health Security – invest in health build a safer
future”. A grand seminar was
conducted at our college. Prof.
(Mrs.) Fathima, Principal,
Padmashree College of Nursing, Bangalore was the Chief Guest.

Teacher’s day was celebrated and students
honored their respected teachers with a spectacular programme.
v
Our budding “Fresher’s” came out with
excellent talents during fresher’s day.

60th Independence Day was
celebrated. Prof. Mrs. Kanchana,
Principal was the Chief Guest and she hoisted the flag.

The college successfully organized blood
donation camp in collaboration with Madras Voluntary Blood Donors Association
and the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University. 84 units of blood was
donated.

The college celebrated its Annual sports Day
on Feb 16th 2007. Mrs.
Shanthi, Head mistress of PKGHSS, Ambattur
was the chief guest and Mr. A.R. Kasiviswanathan, Trustee presided
over the function. Ms. Elsavarghese, second year student bagged Lakshmi
Arunachalam Rolling shield for individual championship.
v World Alzheimer Awareness day is celebrated every year on 21st September. Our College celebrated the Alzheimer awareness week by conducting Symposium, poster presentation, elocution, essay and quiz competition by faculty and students.
v MR. Jonathan Natraj, Family resident from college of medicine, University of Saskatchewan completed training at Omayal Achi Community Health Centre and SMF Hospital.
v Ms. Hannah, Nurse from Denmark visited our College and Omayal Achi Community Health Centre.
v Prof. Barry Brown of Saskatchewan visited
our college and gave a guest
lecture on Technology for Enhanced Learning for faculty
and students.

Dr. Elango Medical officer from Gremaltes gave
a lecture on leprosy updates as part of Anti Leprosy Day.
v 9 students from our college with teaching staff participated in the inter college sports meet organized by CSI Jayaraj College of Nursing and the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University.
v Cancer Awareness Programme was organized by faculty and students in the college on 11.10.2007. Dr. Mohan, Medical Officer gave speech and students explained on various exhibits regarding cancer treatment and prevention. The programme was conducted at Omayal Achi Community Health Centre and Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital. Students participated in cancer awareness rally organized by CANSTOP, Sundaram Medical Foundation.
v World Mental Health Day was celebrated in the college on 12.10.2007. The Psychiatry Nursing Department faculty presented papers on the theme to the staffs and students.
v On 13.11.2007 M.V. Diabetes speciality center conducted diabetes awarness camp at our college. The team conducted essay and drawing competition for 40 students and best 3 were awarded medals and certificates. Diabetes awareness camp was conducted at Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital. Dr. T.J. Rao, Director highlighted on theme. Students conducted Villupattu, health talk and exhibition on the theme.
v Medical Surgical Department conducted a research on knowledge regarding diabetes among school adolescents at different schools and IEC programme on diabetes awareness was given.

Seminar
on Diabetes Awareness was organized and presented by faculty in the
college.
v On 23.11.2007 XVI Lamp lighting ceremony was conducted successfully.
v Dr. T.J. Rao, Honorary Director of Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital was the Chief Guest. Dr.(Mrs).A.V.Raman Dean, lighted the Florence Nightingale lamp and delivered the pledge to B.Sc (N) First Year students. Mr. A.R. Kasi Viswanathan felicitated the Chief Guest.
v Dr.(Mrs).A.V.Raman gave keynote address at the State level workshop on Development of Teaching Modules in selected Nursing and Allied Subjects organized by Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Paramedical Sciences Coimbatore on 12.11.07 & 13.11.07.
v On 20.11.07 Dr. Usha Udupa Psychiatrist gave a lecture on Child and Adolescent Psychology to faculty and students.
WORKSHOP
The Nursing Education Department organized a two-day Workshop on the theme “Nursing Education Experiencing a Transition”. There were about 200 delegates from various colleges in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra and Kerala.

ANC Clinic, Underfive Clinic, ENT Clinic, Siddha Clinic and Eye
Clinic.
v Eye camp, Dental camp, Women welfare camp, Special camps are conducted for general public who are benefited from the services.

Mrs. Vasantha Kalyani participated and presented paper on Emergency cardiac care in National Conference at Mangalore.
Ms. Geetha attended International Workshop on Manual handling of patients at RVS College of Nursing Salem.
Prof. Mrs. Kanchana, Principal attended leadership summit organized by International hospital federation(France and MMM, Chennai)
Mr. Vijaya Kumar attended the INC workshop on Disaster Management at Kanyakumari.
Mrs. Manonmani and Miss. Devi C G attended workshop on Gender concern about food security at Taramani.
Ms. Hemalatha attended the 6th Annual conference of Indian society of Psychiatric Nursing at Ludhiana and presented paper.
Faculty members organized continuing education programme for OCN staff Nurses on hospital Management at Ordinance Cloth factory for one week.
Mrs. K. Jayanthi, Lecturer in Medical Surgical Nursing attended a workshop on Innovative application of Nursing process at Sahyadri College of Nursing – Mangalore.
Mrs. Susan Mathew, Lecturer, Ms. B.Bhagvathy, Mrs. Murugalakshmi attended the state level workshop on World Breast Feeding week celebration organized by Community Food and Nutrition Extension unit.
4 staff and 16 M.Sc (N) II year students attended the Paediatric Neurology program organized by Neurosciences India group.
M.Sc (N) I year students and 5 Clincial Instructors attended the workshop on Professionalism of Nursing from Education to Clinical Practice organized by Apollo College of Nursing.
Mrs. Ciby Jose, Prof & HOD of Psychiatric Department and 19 M.Sc (N) I year students attended the workshop on application of Biostatistics by Dr. Amalraj organized by Saveetha College of Nursing.
Mrs. Padmavathy attended the World Blood Donor’s day at the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University and College was awarded for collecting 84 units of Blood during the blood donation camp.
Dr. (Mrs.) A.V.Raman presented a paper on Application of Nursing theory into Nursing practice at “National Workshop on application of Nursing theories organized by Vinayaka Mission Annapoorani College of Nursing, Salem.

8 M.Sc (N) II year students attended the National symposium on the interface between Epilepsy and behaviour conducted by Neuroscience India group.
Mrs. Rachel, Vice Principal and Mrs. Ciby Jose, HOD, Psychiatry Department presented their research protocol presentations for Ph.D Registration at Vinayaka Mission Salem.
Mr. Vijayakumar presented a paper at International Conference at SRMC and RI (DU) Porur .
Mrs Vasantha Kalyani and Ms. Susan Mathew attended the workshop on “Impact of Technology in Nursing Administration” Organised by MAC College of Nursing.
Mrs. Jeyanthi and Ms. Devi C.G. were sponsored to attend the state level workshop on development of teaching modules in selected Nursing and Allied subjects at SRIPMS Coimbatore.
Mrs. Manonmani attended the meeting organized by Sankara Eye hospital as a mark of conducting 1 lakh conducting free cataract surgeries.
Mrs. Sivagami and Mrs. Thilagam attended the blood donation seminar organized by Madras Voluntary Blood Donor Association.
Ms. Geetha gave a lecture on ECG at The Academy for Clinical Training(TACT)
5 clinical instructors attended the training course on mechanical ventilation organized by The Academy for Clinical Training.
Mrs. Sumathi was sponsored to attend Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support at The Academy for Clinical Training .
8 faculty members were sponsored to attend “Effective practice for infection control” at The Academy for Clinical Training .
Mrs. Lydia, Mrs. Vasanthakumari, Ms. Geetha attended Paediatric Advanced Life support and 5 faculty members attended Neonatal Advanced Life Support at The Academy for Clinical Training .
Mrs. Kalaiselvi, Ms. Seline Esther, Ms. Kalaiyarasi and Ms. Varalakshmi attended course on essentials of ventilation for nurses at The Academy for Clinical Training .
