NEWS:
We are delighted to update you on our growth in various dimensions. The present strength of our college is

M.Sc(N) - 39
The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University conducted the Inspection for granting continuance of provisional affiliation for B.Sc(N) and M.Sc(N) degree programmes for the year 2008-2009 on 25.01.08.
From May 16 to July 17, 2008 Prof.(Mrs.) S. Kanchana, Principal was deputed to undertake research training programme at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh where she has undertaken Post Doctoral Programme.
Prof.(Mrs.) S. Kanchana presented Ph.D Thesis and was appreciated by all and she was invited to attend the official opening of new Queen Margaret University Campus on July 4th 2008 by Her Majesty the Queen.
The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University conducted XVIII convocation on 20.09.08. The Under graduate and Post Graduate students received their degrees during the convocation.
Ph.D Nursing
Interview was conducted on 06.10.08. Eligible candidates in Community Health Nursing and Maternity Nursing were
selected.
FIRST
ALUMNI MEET:
The first alumni reunion was held on 09.02.2008 at
Omayal Achi College of Nursing premises.
Total 94 Alumni members participated in the meet, out of which 62 were
B.Sc(N) and 32 M.Sc(N) graduates. CNE
on “Transition in Nursing” was presented by Dr.(Mrs)A.V. Raman and Dr. Raj
Narayanan gave a message to all alumnus and highlighted on current trends in
medicine. Programme concluded with variety entertainment programme by B.Sc(N)
students with their spectacular performance.
CAMPUS INTERVIEW:
· V.S. Subramaniyam Oncology Hospital conducted campus Interview on 01.04.08. 7 B.Sc(N) final year students were selected by the Hospital Authority.
· On 25.07.2008, The Madras Medical Mission hospital conducted campus Interview for the final year students and 20 students were selected after a group discussion.
·
B.Sc(N) 2004-2008 Batch final year students attended
campus Interview at Adayar Cancer Institute on 6th and 7th
of August. 8 Students were joining the Hospital.
AWARDS
On 12.05.2008, Dr.(Mrs.) A.V. Raman was awarded “National Florence Nightingale award” by Smt. Prathiba Devisingh Patil, President of India during the Nurses day at Rashtrapathi Bhavan, New Delhi for Public recognition of her valuable services to the society.
Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives council honoured Dr.(Mrs.) A.V. Raman for receiving the prestigious Florence Nightingale award from Honorable President Mrs. Prathiba patil.
On 04.11.2008 Dr.(Mrs.) A. V. Raman Dean received the TNAI CENTENARY award from Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam which was given by TNAI, New Delhi in appreciation and professional recognition of her commendable contributions towards Nursing education, Nursing research and Nursing Profession.
CELEBRATIONS
AND HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAM
* XVI Annual Sports Day was celebrated on 08.03.2008. Mr. Chandrasekar Senior GM, HVF was the chief guest and Mr. AR Kasiviswanathan, Trustee presided over the function.
· Mrs. Lakshmi Arunachalam Rolling Shield for individual Championship was awarded to Ms. Merlin Lazarus of Jasper group.
· Mr. Mouleeswaran Shield for March past was bagged by Sapphire group.
· Mr. Poosha Durai shield for Tennikoit was bagged by Sapphire group.
· Rolling shield for Throw ball was also bagged by Sapphire Group.
· The Overall championship for the XVI sports meet was given to sapphire group.
· The SNA Body organized games for faculty, Staff and Children followed by the Fund raising program during which delicious food items.were served.
* XVI Annual Day programme was celebrated on 18.07.2008 by our College at Valluvar Vasuki Kalyana Mandapam, Avadi, Chennai 600 062.The Director, HVF Hospital, Avadi, Dr. M.S. Prasad was the Chief Guest.
· Mr. AR. Kasiviswanathan Trustee, Felicitated the Chief Guest and released the college Magazine “NURTURE 2008”. The first copy was received by the Chief Guest.
· The AMM Arunachalam Silver Medal for Best Academic Student M.Sc(N) was awarded to Ms. Joy Kezia, for Best out going student.to B.Sc(N) student Ms. Gayathri R and for Best Clinical Nurse to M.Sc(N) student Ms. Sivasankari.
· The Unnamalai Achi Proficiency Prize was awarded to the class toppers by Mrs. Seetha Subbiah, Trustee.

· Mrs. Linda Sydie former Dean of Nursing, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, Scotland, sponsored 200 pounds for a student who scores the highest mark in the Community Health Nursing subject I and II in both theory and practicals. Ms. M.R. Remya and Ms. Karunambigai were given cash of Rs.8000/- each for scoring 79.3% in Community Health Nursing.
· Ms. Elsa Varghese was awarded the “OCN Best Athlete for the year 2007”. B.Sc(N) III year students (2004-2008 batch) received the shield for getting the highest class distinctions in the University Examinations.
· Variety entertainment programme was given by SNA body which was appreciated by all - guests, parents, staffs and students.
* As a part of Society of Midwives India, celebration of safe mother-hood day was conducted at Omayal Achi Community Health Centre on 10.04.2008 with the antenatal mothers. Students conducted a Villupattu and a role play on safe motherhood Health talk on safe motherhood was given to Antenatal mothers. On 11.04.2008 in Antenatal OPD of Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital, Ambattur the Safe motherhood day was celebrated by our B.Sc(N) students presenting a Villupattu and role play depicting safe motherhood.
* The World Health Day was celebrated on 08.04.2008 by organizing a seminar on the theme “Promoting health from climate Change”. The SNA body organized a poster presentation on the ill effects of climate change. This was appreciated by all.
* The International Midwives day was celebrated in our college by organizing a workshop on the theme “Healthy families – a key to future” on 28.04.2008. Mrs. Kalaichelvi, Health education training officer, Chennai was the chief guest and Mrs. Gomathi, President of VHN was the guest of honour. Seven speakers from various colleges presented the sub topic of the theme and students from different colleges presented variety shows on the theme. Total 85 participants from 10 colleges attended the workshop.
* M.Sc(N) students and B.Sc(N) students participated in Breast feeding week competition during 05.08.2008 to 07.08.2008 organized by Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital and bagged prizes for Quiz and poster presentation.
World Breast feeding week was celebrated on 08.08.2008 at Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital. M.Sc(N) students organized a health awareness cultural program on “Mothers support going for the Gold”.
On 14.08.08 in Omayal Achi Community Health Centre, NSS unit and YRC Unit, Pediatric, Maternity and Community Health Nursing Departments alongwith Omayal Achi Community Health Centre staff conducted Breast feeding awareness program. M.Sc(N) students organized cultural programme depicting the theme.
* The College conducted the XVII Lamp lighting ceremony on 12.11.08. Mrs. R. Josephine Little Flower, Registrar, The Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council was the Chief Guest. Prof. (Mrs.) Kanchana, Principal lighted the Florence Nightingale lamp and delivered the Pledge to B.Sc(N) I year students. Mrs. Valli Alagappan, Managing Trustee felicitated the Chief Guest.
* The AIDS day awareness programme was conducted by our College B.Sc(N) Students by organizing a mime on “AIDS”. This programme was conducted at different places to educate the people regarding AIDS - on 10.12.2008 at Omayal Achi Community Health Centre, on 11.12.2008 at Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital and on 14.12.2008 at Southern Railway Hospital, Perambur.
* The Faculty of Omayal Achi College of Nursing celebrated the Christmas Function on 19.12.2008 in the college campus.
A memorandum of Understanding was signed between Omayal Achi College of Nursing, Chennai – India and University of Sasketchewan, Saskatoon, Canada for Collaborative Research Initiatives, Capacity building initiatives, focusing on professional development and for exchange studying and research opportunities on 24.03.2008.
Mrs. Valli Alagappan, Managing Trustee of Omayal Achi College of Nursing signed the Memorandum of Understanding and Mr. Steve Franklin, Vice President Research Department, University of Sasketchewan signed the Memorandum of understanding on behalf of University of Sasketchewan, Canada.
· Prof. Barry Brown and Prof.(Mrs.) Yvonne Brown and 6 B.Sc(N) IV year students from University of Sasketchewan, Canada arrived on 08.01.08. The Canadian Nursing students had an observation visit to various affiliated hospitals and participated in the NSS Camp. They were posted at Omayal Achi Community Health Centre and were conducting Family Nursing visits in the villages.
· On 24.03.08 Dr. Vivian Ramsden, visiting professor from College of Medicine, University of Sasketchewan, Canada alongwith her colleagues visited Omayal Achi Community Health Centre to observe the infrastructure and health care services provided.
· On 26.11.08 Ms. Clair, a visitor from England had come to Omayal Achi College of Nursing and Omayal Achi Community Health Centre through SOS village, Tambaram.
· On 10.11.08 Ms. Rajini Bhagaa from National Institute of Health and Family Welfare visited Mrs. Valli Alagappan, Managing Trustee at Trust Office.
A new tie-up was created between Omayal Achi College of Nursing and HVF Hospital, Avadi.
WORKSHOP
& CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION:
The Tamil Nadu Nursing council under the governance of Dr.(Mrs.) A.V. Raman alongwith 6 experts from various colleges conducted a three days workshop to prepare midwifery record for B.Sc(N) and M.Sc(N) and PC.B.Sc(N) Programme. Final report of all records were handed over to the council by Dr.(Mrs.) A.V. Raman.
A workshop on “Stress Management” was organized by M.Sc(N) II year on 16.02.08. Dr. SaraManickaraj was the resource person. All teaching faculty and M.Sc(N) students attended the workshop.
On 16.01.08 a CNE was conducted by our college on “Developing teaching modules in Nursing”. Dr.(Mrs). A.V. Raman, Dean was the resource person for the CNE. All faculty and students from our college and students from Father Muller College of Nursing attended the CNE.
The faculty of Omayal Achi College of nursing conducted a CNE programme from 24.03.08 to 29.03.08 on various aspects of nursing administration to the participants of ordinance factories, Institute of learning Avadi.
All faculties presented the logbook presentation for M.Sc (N) new syllabus from 02.06.08 to 03.06.08.
On 23.09.2008, Dr.(Mrs). A.V. Raman presented on “Efforts for strengthening midwifery practice in India” to all faculty members.
On 29.09.2008, Dr.Mohan, Surgeon, Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital and Dr. Santosh, Surgeon, Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital conducted a CNE on “Emergency GI disorders. All faculty, B.Sc (N), and M.Sc (N) students attended the CNE.
A CNE on clinical supervision was organized for all faculty, M.Sc (N) I & II year students on 01.11.08. Dr.(Mrs). A.V. Raman Dean, Prof.(Mrs). Kanchana S Principal, Mrs. Celina Vice Principal, Prof.(Mrs.) Ciby Jose and all Heads of the departments presented papers on various concepts.
M.Sc (N) I year students had one day training programme on Disaster Management organized by the college in collaboration with YRC.
· From 16.07.08 to 17.07.08, 9 SOS mothers from SOS village, Tambaram attended a training programme conducted by faculty of our college.
STUDENTS NURSES ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES:-
· B.Sc(N) students posted at AVADI PHC attended Training on DOTS program.
· On 10.10.08, 25 B.Sc(N) III year students participated in Mental Health Day rally near Marina.
· Teachers day was celebrated and students honored their respected teachers with a spectacular programme .
· On 06.11.08, Saranya of B.Sc(N) III year participated in University Day Celebration and presented a Solo Dance.
· Our budding “Freshers” came out with excellent talent during Fresher’s day.
· Students had participated in the AIDS control programme which was conducted at Southern Railway Hospital.
· Students had participated and won prizes in the debate organized by Pooncharal, Mangaiyarmalar.
· The II and III year B.Sc (N) students participated in the poster competition depicting the WHO day Theme “Promoting health from climate change”. Prizes were given to the first three best posters in appreciation for their creative work.
NSS
ACTIVITIES:
§ The NSS Special camp was conducted from 21.01.08 to 30.01.08 at Gowdipuram village. Total of 50 NSS volunteers participated in the programme. Mrs. Valli Alagappan and Mr. AR. Kasiviswanathan were the Chief Guests.
§ 10 students from NSS and YRC were volunteers in Blood donation camp and Eye camp, conducted at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ambattur.
§ 50 YRC and NSS volunteers participated in the Medical camp alongwith Chennai Corporation at Kasimedu.
· Students participated in Varumun Kappom camp organized by Tirumullivoyal PHC at Kovilpathagai.
· 5 Students donated blood at Indian Red Cross Society at Egmore.
STAFF
DEVELOPMENT AND WELFARE PROGRAMMES:-
· On 25/1/08, Geetha V was deputed as a resource person for conducting “ACLS” class at Gokulam College of Nursing, Salem.
· From 10/2/08 to 11/2/08, Mrs. Ciby Jose, Mr. Vijay Kumar, Mrs. Devi, Ms. Hemalatha attended the 7th Annual National Conference of Indian society of Psychiatric Nurses at Kochi, Kerala and presented papers.
· Mrs. Rosalind Rachel attended the SOMI chapter secretary meeting at Hyderabad from 3/3/08 to 8/3/08.
· 12/5/08 – 16/5/08, Mrs.Amutha was sponsored to attend a course on Training programme on management of training, conducted by department of education and training, National Institute of health and family welfare, New Delhi.
· LIBASOFT orientation was given to staff and students in batches to access books and journals from library.
· Mrs. Padmavathy attended the function at University to collect medal for blood donation as an appreciation for participation and voluntary donations.
· Ms. Ruth Rani Princely and Mrs. Amutha attended a meeting for Indian Academy of Pediatrics regarding the breast-feeding week celebration.
· On 15/7/08, Prof.(Mrs). S. Kanchana Principal attended Ph.D viva voce presentation of Mrs. Saradha on “yoga in menopausal women” at Sri Ramachandra University, Porur.
· On 22/7/08, Ms. Bhagavathy, lecturer and Ms. Ruth Rani Princely, lecturer attended the workshop on “Introduction to Genetics” organized by Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Guindy.
· On 5/8/08, Mrs. Sivagami and Mrs. Thilagam attended state level workshop on world breast feeding week 2008 at CPWD auditorium, Rajaji Bhawan.
· On 16/8/08, Mrs. Jeyarekha and B.Sc (N) II year M.Sc (N) I year students attended endowment orientaion organized by Neuro sciences group.
· On 25/9/08- Mrs. Vasantha Kumari, Ms. Ruth Rani Princely were sponsored to attend the training programme on neonatal resuscitation at St. Isabel Hospital, Mylapore.
· Mrs. C.G. Devi, Lecturer attended the Innovation to education, International conference at Chennai.
· On 29/9/08 – 30/9/08, Mrs. Vijayalakshmi and Ms. Bhagavathy attended the 3 day midwifery convention program organized by Society of Midwives of India at Kolkata.
· From 2/10/08 to 4/10/08- Dr.(Mrs). A.V. Raman, Dean, Mrs. R Vijayalakshmi, Ms. Bhagavathy attended SOMI conference at Kolkata and presented papers. Ms. Selvarani Dip (N) and Ms. Dhanalakshmi MPHW from Omayal Achi Community Health Centre were deputed to attend the conference.
· On 18/10/08 – 20/10/08, Mrs. Sivagami, Mrs. Thilagam & Mr. Chithravel presented their abstracts in the form of oral and poster presentation at National Community Health Nursing conference organized at CMC, Vellore.
· On 18/10/08- Ms. Hemalatha and Ms. Ruth Rani Princely with 4 M.Sc (N) I year and 7 M.Sc (N) II year students attended one day seminar on “Alternate Parenting, organized by Karnaprayag Trust.
· On 31/10/08- Mrs. Jeyanthi and Mrs. Sumathi attended the workshop on “ Quality – A Key concept in Patient care” organized by Department of Nursing science CMCH Vellore.
· From 17/11/08 to 18/11/08- Prof. Mrs. Kanchana, Principal was deputed to attend the National conference organized by NRSI & Manipal College of Nursing at Mangalore and did poster presentation along with Prof.(Mrs). Ciby Jose.
· On 21/11/08- Ms. Ruth Rani Princely attended CNE on “Making newborn care concepts known to mass” at MAC college of Nursing.
· From 04/12/08 to 05/12/08 Prof. (Mrs.) Ciby Jose was deputed to attend a Nursing Research conference at Secret Heart College of Nursing, Madurai.
· From 01/12/2008 to 02/12/2008 Mrs. Sumathi attend a conference on “Current trends and issues in HIV / AIDS” at CMC, Vellore and did poster presentation.
· From 12/12/2008 to 13/12/2008 Mrs. Celina, Vice-Principal, was deputed to attend the International Conference on “Reflection in Nursing Practice” at Apollo College of Nursing and did poster presentation.
· On December 2008 Mrs. Vijayalakshmi. R. presented a paper on “Iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women” at AJ College of Nursing, Chennai.
STAFF
DEPUTED TO ATTEND TRAINING PROGRAM AT TACT.
§ 5 clinical instructors were sponsored to the course on basics of Airway Management organized by TACT on 21st April 2008.
§ 3 faculty were sponsored to the course of advanced cardiac life support on 3rd and 4th May and Mrs. Lydia attended class at TACT on manual ventilator on 9th May 2008.
§ 5 faculty members attended the clinical training programme at TACT, Anna Nagar, The training was on ACLS, BLS, PPE, IV calculation from 14 – 16 July 2008 and 21 –23 July 2008.
§ Mrs. Muthulakshmi clinical Instructor attended BLS course at TACT on 22.10.2008
§
On 22.09.08, 6 clinical instructors attended ABG
analysis and basic airway management organized by TACT.
§
On 05.11.2008 & 06.11.2008, Mrs. Uma & Mrs.
Jayalakshmi were deputed to attend workshop on BLS & Essentials of
ventilation organized by TACT.

· Omayal Achi Community Health Centre is dedicated to a philosophy of excellence in providing health services, Quality education and community oriented research in an Integrated system that values quality life.
· People benefit form General Morbidity clinic, Underfive Clinic, ENT clinics, siddha Clinic and Eye Clinic etc.,
· Eye camp, Dental camp, Women welfare camp, Special camps are conducted for general public who are benefited from the services.
